What were the aims of his second voyage in 1493?
Responsible for establishing a colony of settlements in the new lands discovered in the Caribbean.
Treat the natives well, convert them to Christianity.
Send gold back to Spain.
Power to appoint officials on his behalf.
Isabela
A new settlement was founded in 1493 called Isabela.
Columbus left his brother Bartholomew in charge of the settlement and Columbus left in 1494.
Why was Isabela unsuccessful?
Poor location
Spanish were more interested in gold, than farming the land.
Columbus had no experience if running a settlement.
Angry and the conflict they caused.
Why had La Navidad failed?
Found burned to the ground.
Told by a local chief that the Spaniards had stolen women, hunted for gold.
Tainos attacked them
Spaniards were all killed.
How long was the second voyage?
1493-1496
Santo Domigo
Bartholomew immediately began building a new settlement while Columbus was away.
All inhabitants of Isabela moved there as the land was much more fertile and promising.
Why was Santa Domingo so important?
Conquistadors stopped in Santa Domingo before sailing off to discover new land.
