Made in the Stars - 1 Flashcards
What is an element?
Pure substances containing only one type of atom
Where are elements made?
In the stars
What process creates elements?
Nuclear fusion (where hydrogen atoms come together to make heavier elements)
How do we get elements we need on Earth
We can extract them from substances (ORES) found in the Earth’s crust
Explain how we will obtain a pure sample of copper from it’s ore.
A pure sample of copper can be obtained by HEATING copper ORE mixed with CARBON.
What is a proton?
A small, positively charged particle of matter found in the nucleus of atoms of all elements. (proton number will equal electron number)
What is a neutron
A subatomic particle without an electric charge, present in all atomic nuclei.
What is a electron
A subatomic particle with a negative charge of electricity, found in all atoms. Electrons orbit around the nucleus in electron shells.
What is the atomic mass of an element?
The total number of protons and neutrons in a nucleus.
What is the periodic table?
A list of all the elements that have been discovered. These are organised by increasing atomic number.
What is a Chemical Symbol?
A chemical symbol is a short-hand derived from the scientific name of a chemical element—e.g., S for sulfur and Si for silicon.
What is the atomic number of an element?
It is equal to the total number of protons in the atomic nucleus
What states of matter can elements be found?
Solid, Liquid or gas.
Name the only 2 liquid elements
Bromine
Mercury is a liquid metal.
These are the only two elements found as a liquid at room temperature.
Where do we find Non-Metal elements on the periodic table
On the right hand side
