Cells Alive 1 - The Cell Flashcards
Define the cell
The basic unit of life
Name 3 parts of a microscope
Any 3 of the following:
Eyepiece lens, stage, objective lens, mirror
Which part of a microscope holds the slide in place
Stageclip
Which part of a microscope do you adjust to make your sample more clear?
Focusing dial
What part of the microscope reflects light into the aperture?
Mirror
What part is where you look through the microscope?
Eyepiece
Why do we use a stain when looking at samples under the microscope?
Stains make cells more visible (allows us to see the organelles inside).
What stain would we use to view a plant cell?
Iodine solution
Name 3 structures found in an animal cell!
Cytoplasm, Cell membrane, nucleus.
What is the function of the nucleus?
It controls cell activities, contains the DNA.
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
A Jelly like substance where the chemical reactions of the cell take place.
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Controls what enters and leaves the cell.
Name three structures found in a plant cell but not an animal cell!
Vacuole, Cell wall and chloroplasts.
What is the function of the chloroplast?
Contains a green pigment called chlorophyll, this allows plants to photosynthesise.
What is the function of the vacuole?
Contains cell sap in plants vacuoles help maintain water balance.
