MacroEvolution | VOCAB Flashcards
Macroevolution
Evolution at a larger scale across many populations
Microevolution
Small changes across a population
Speciation
Process for creating new species
Species
A group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of breeding/exchanging genes
Species Concept
Used to define what a species is
Morphological Concept
Characterizes a species based by body shape and other structural features
Biological Concept
Group of organisms can potentially interbreed, or mate, with one another to produce viable fertile offspring
Reproductive Isolation
Prevents members of different species from producing offspring
Prezygotic Isolation Mechanism
Prevents mating and occurs before copulation
Ecological Isolation
Species that occur in the same area, but occupy different habitats and rarely interact with each other
Temporal Isolation
Species living in the same area that mate at different times of the day/year
Behavioral Isolation
When signals of one species are not recognized by another
Mechanical Isolation
Different in physical structures make mating impossible
Gamete Isolation
When indiviuals of different species mate, but fertilization does not occur because of incompatability between the sperm and egg
Postzygotic Isolation Mechanism
Prevents hyrbid offspring from developing/breeding
Hyrbid Inviability
Reduces a hybrids capacity to mature into a fit, healthy adult. Cannot survivie to maturity (miscarriage)
Hybrid Sterility
Hybrids are sterile
Hybrid Breakdown
The second generation of hybrids reduce survival/frttility
Speciation
Formation of a new species
Allpatric Speciation (Variance)
When one population is geographically isolated form other populations
Symatric Speciation
A population develops into 2 or more reproduvily isolated groups without geographic isolation
Adaptive Radiation
When many species evolve from a single common ancestor after they are exposed to different enviroments & resoures
Population
Any group of individuals of the same species living together in the same area
