Macro & Microevolution of Humans Flashcards
Population Genetics
the study of changes in gene frequencies and genetic variation in populations.
Locus
a region of DNA sequence on a chromosome that codes for a trait (eye color)
Allele
a specific DNA sequence at a locus that codes for a form of a trait (brown eyes)
Genotype
genetics of an organism
Phenotype
outward appearance of an organism
Genetic Drift
random changes in gene frequencies caused by random events: more common in small populations
Gene Flow
changes in gene frequencies caused by migration and reproduction by migrants
Mutation
changes in gene frequencies caused by changes in the DNA sequence: rare doesn’t impact natural populations at high rate.
Natural Selection
changes in gene frequencies caused by different rates of survival and reproduction of different genotypes.
