What is a chip removal mechanism
A machine that cuts small chips of metal away from a material
What are lathe operations
Rigid machine tools remove material from a rotating work piece
What is drilling
Used to produce a hole which may be followed by tapping or boring to improve accuracy
What is milling
Used to produce external surfaces, slots and contoured shapes
What is abrasion
Removal of shapes by tiny chips by hard tiny randomly orientated grit
What is grinding
Removal of metal by a rotating abrasive wheel
Name some cutting tool materials and their mechanical properties
Carbon steels, tungsten carbide, diamonds, ceramics, high speed steels
Must combine strength, hard, roughness
What are lubricants used for 🍆💦
Fluids that are used to cool and lubricate and increase tool life.
Water based solutions, synthetic oils, inactive oils
What is laser beam machining
The unreflected light is absorbed thus heating the surface which then melts and evaporates
What is water jet cutting
High pressure water pump produces a high speed water jet filled with aggregates to cut the metal
What is electro discharge machining
Tiny lightening bolts perform the removal of the material. Slow removal rate. Capable of machining complex parts
