Joining Processes Flashcards
What are mechanical joints and what are they’re advantages?
Fasteners are used to exploit elastic or frictional properties and hold two components together.
Easy to use
allow dismantling
Allow different materials to be joined together
What are adhesives and name some examples
Joining by placing a liquid between two parts
Examples are brazing and soldering
What is welding
Used to join two parts permanently
What is fusion welding
Melting/softening parts in a localised area where they meet and cooling it to join them
What is gas welding
Used heat from a welding torch to fused edges of parts together
What is arc welding
Heat is supplied to an extra element called a filler which expands and contracts to fill and seal the gap between two components
What is shielded metal arc welding
An electric arc melts a hux covered metal electrode and the base metal. This covering melts to form a slag which covers the weld and protects from oxidation
