What is the context for costume design ?
Machinal took place in 1920s which was a signifcant period for fashion history
Costumes set the time and place for the play as well as set the mood and tone
This period was known for its flapper style dresses, bob hair cuts and accessories
How would the young woman’s hair be ?
- Hair perfectly positioned throughout the play as she is fixated by her hair. Positioned in a clean black bob cut with clips- unnaturally unmoving fitting with the expressionistic style of dreamlike and uncanny appearance
What could you consider about the young woman’s nighty ?
It becomes more dirty, yellow and rattier instead of a pristine white
- symbolic of the suppression of free feminity and her forced position within the machine which is corroding her will
- In intimate it’s a silk nighty with a vibrant red: passion, lust and desire which juxtaposes her relationship that is almost non existent with Jones m
What accessories could you consider for the YM ?
Hair clips
Gloves matching hat
Big wash up gloves in episode 2
Glove motif (on in every scene apart from bar intimate) as she is free
Normal makeup where as ensemble in expressionistic
What would the young woman wear to business ?
Skirt suit- brown cotton suit jacket with a vintage woolen navy double breasted-jacket over the top. Sharp and angular color
White cotton shirt with top two buttons undone
Skirt narrow and straight at mid calf length
Flat black loafers
What would the YM wear at home ?
Dark navy skirt tucked into white cotton shirt with a grey woollen cardigan slightly loose fitting with two buttons done up
Rubber washing up gloves yellow and large with blue inside hands
What would the YM wear on the honey moon ?
- dress jacket coming
- underwear and boxy with an off white nighty over the top
- pantaloons and qauters hold up stockings with majority of her being covered up and a modest exposure of areas such as arms and chest/neck
- gloves kept on
What would the YM wear at the hospital ?
Hospital gown
What would the young woman wear at the speakeasy ?
The same honey moon dress
- black Great Gatsby style dress
What would the young woman wear in intimate ?
Underwear/ peti coat (dress lingerie, slip coat, thin spaghetti strap just above the knee + drop waist)
Removes innocence
Gloves are off in this scene contrasting to the honeymoon
In domestic what would the young woman wear ?
A dressing gown
In the law what would the YM wear ?
Shirt suit
In a machine what would the young woman wear ?
Prison garb
