What they do rather than who they are
- gives audience an expectation of their behavior and status inviting us to be guilty of excluding the young woman from society

He is a good husband taking marital rights and provides a child, brings her flowers

He does not conform to the rigid rules of society
He gives the young woman validation telling her what she wants to hear
