“Brave Macbeth - Well he deserves that name”

. In the beginning he is seen in a very high regard
. He deserves that name - he has been fighting for the king as a worthy and valiant soldier

. It shows how the royals (king) only cared about a man’s bravery. Because Macbeth was brave, they thought he was a perfect man

. Brave - Courageous, willing to do things others won’t - he will kill the king later

“Let not light see my dark and deep desires”

. Shows that Macbeth is already having dark desires and thoughts - without the influence of Lady Macbeth -
. These thoughts are stuck with Macbeth

. Supernatural - within one scene, they could change Macbeth’s character
. The catalyst for Macbeth’s change is when he meets the witches

. Take away the qualities that make me feminine (soft, elegant, stuck to her husband) and make me more masculine
. She needs to be evil and feel no emotion
. She needs to sacrifice what means a lot to her (looks and beauty)
. She wants to be fully immersed and willing to give it all
. Fill her with the worst possible evil

. Danger of patriarchy
. For a patriarchal man, Macbeth had to be brave and courageous
. Calling Macbeth a coward
. Until Macbeth kills Duncan, she sees him as an unmasculine and cant be considered manly enough to be her husband
. This is what propels Macbeth over the edge to commit the act
. Macbeth does this to prove to his wife that he is manly enough

Act 2 Scene 2 - Macbeth
“Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood clean from my hand”

A

. Blood is a symbol for his guilt
. He feels so guilt for killing another an even though he is used to it
. This time he killed someone for the wrong reason, in the army he did it for the right reason
. This is why he feels so guilty killing Duncan

. Then he kills Banquo, Lady Macduff, her son, at this point he doesn’t feel any guilt

. From this point to Act 5 Scene 2, Macbeth becomes almost emotionless
. Act 5 Scene 1 - Lady Macbeth tries to wash the blood off of her hands

Act 5 Scene 2 - Macbeth
“Out, out, brief candle! Life’s but a walking shadow”

A

. Brief candle - metaphor for life
. You can never catch your shadow, you are always chasing it
. Shadow can represent, power, ambition, titles, kingship - whatever Macbeth chases in life - he always chases it, he wants it more

. He firstly wanted to become king, once he became king, he killed Banquo and fleance because he wanted his Lineage to be king - He is constantly chasing something

. The candle is a metaphor for his life, if lit, the candle is going to burn
. Macbeth’s candle is blown out by Macduff

. Telling Macbeth to be as two-faced as possible

. What you expect happens doesn’t happen

. Instrument of darkness - an instrument is to be played - they are going to play Macbeth and Banquo
. Foreshadowing evil, something terrible
. Admits the witches will tell truths, juxtaposition - something so evil will tell truths-

. They’re gonna tell truths not because they care about you but because they want to win your trust, your loyalty - once they reel you in, they will betray you and put you in the deepest consequence

. They will pull you in and you will suffer the consequences
