. danger of patriarchy
. Lady Macbeth - (She calls Macbeth a coward) - The only thing that matters to Macbeth in a patriarchal society is power and reputation - by calling him a coward, she insults him and motivates him
. Unseamed - Verb, Metaphor - talking about the way Macbeth fights with his sword - We get the impression that Macbeth is super precise - Implies enjoyment on the battlefield
. Unseaming the enemy from the belly button to the chin - He is purposely inflicting pain on the enemy - making the enemy bleed out and die a slow and painful death - showing he is enjoying battle - he wants his enemies to suffer the most pain possible
. Early foreshadowing, he is fighting not to kill people, but to inflict pain and suffering - He has a dark side
. He is like an artist - painting a canvas - forcing the enemy to suffer before they die
. Witches are the catalyst that bring this to the surface
. Macbeth is patriarchal - killing the enemy - strong, manly - A man is supposed to be brave and powerful
. Freud and the idea of the id
. He was a neurologist and said that every human had three sections of the brain - the id, ego, superego - only part that is relevant right now is the id
. The id looks at our raw instinct, instinct of survival, instinct of worship
. survival instinct is that everybody wants to survive
. worship instinct, every body has the instinct to worship, not necessarily God - money, cars , God etc.
. In this moment , when Macbeth makes his enemy suffer because he is a slave to desire, he is worshipping power, the power over another human being
. Throughout the play his id, takes over to the point where the only thing he thinks about is his power and desire

Brief Candle
Metaphor
. Candle - symbolism - A candle will eventually go out - two ways to extinguish it - watch it burn out naturally
- or by human intervention - blowing it out
. The candle symbolizes human life, every single character in the play dies because of human intervention , every single candle is extinguished
. Macbeth understands the fragility of life
. These two quotes go against patriarchy - men aren’t supposed to feel sad or regret - this quote comes out when Lady Macbeth dies - as if the act Macbeth has put on has gone away - maybe everything he was doing was to prove how powerful and strong he was - the mask can now be removed - Now he can breathe
