M5 Big Ideas Flashcards
Marshall & Warren

Von Helmont
Undertook a systematic investigation to determine what plants ‘ate’. He concluded that plants only needed water to survive.
Spencer
Was working on radar arrays when he found that a chocolate bar in his pants had melted. His idea that the microwaves from the equipment could be used to cook food led to the development of the microwave oven.
Eratosthenes
Used his knowledge of mathematics to work out the circumference of the Earth.
Doppler
Used observations of the spectra of binary stars to determine that the observed wavelength of a wave changed based on the relative velocity of the wave and the observer.
Priestley
Performed experiments to discover oxygen.
Independent, dependent and controlled variables
IV is deliberately altered during an investigation. D is what is measured. CV are all the other aspects that must be kept the same during the investigation.
