M4N Chpt 7_10_11 Flashcards
1
Q
How does chunking info help?
A
- Chunking builds and strengthens neurological connection
2
Q
What is the “Generation effect?”
A
- The “generation effect” is the effect chunking has on the brain, specifically strengthening and building neuro connections
3
Q
How does chunking effect problem solving?
A
- Once chunks are made and stored the chunks help build your ability to use intuition and in-depth understanding of process that lead to understanding.
4
Q
What are the steps for building chunks?
A
- Work the problem by hand on paper. Don’t use any references. Work it all the way through.
- Do another problem, paying attention to the process
- Take a break – Interleaving or a real break
- Sleep – before sleeping do another problem
- Do another problem after you wake up
- Ass a new problem – work it like the first, repeat steps 1 – 5
- Active practice – focus your practice on the most difficult parts of the process
5
Q
What are the key concepts of building chunks?
A
- Use recall to solve problem without help, this uses recall and retrieval
- Use rehearsal techniques to firm up the neuro connections
- Use rest/sleep to allow diffuse mode to work
- Chunking steps take advantage of focused and diffuse modes
- Use deliberate practice
- Use active practice
6
Q
How does the “Illusion of competence” impact learning?
A
- Tricks the brain into believing it has learned information when the information is available in front of the student like in a book or viewing a completed problem.
7
Q
How are chunks similar to desktop links?
A
- Chunks are like a shortcut to where the in-depth information is stored.
8
Q
What is choking?
A
- When WM is at capacity.
9
Q
What is the “Testing effect?”
A
- Testing helps stabilize related neuro patterns.
- Testing is a powerful learning took, it enhances understanding and adds to what you already know.
10
Q
What is “Visuospatial Memory?” (VM)
A
- Your brain’s ability to remember where things are and what they look like.
11
Q
How does Visuospatial memory impact learning?
A
- VM helps encapsulate hard to remember concepts by tapping into visual areas of the brain (Occipital lobe) which has enhanced memory ability.
12
Q
What are some other neuro hooks?
A
- Seeing
- Smelling
- Feeling
- Hearing
13
Q
How can neuro hooks be used?
A
- By building these other hooks into metaphors. Don’t just see the object, add the other senses to it to increase its meaning and usefulness.
14
Q
What can be done with metaphors to help create lasting images?
A
- Funnier and more evocative the better
15
Q
What is the “Memory Palace Technique?”
A
- Using familiar locations to add images of the items representing what you want to learn. (e.g. a huge bottle of milk in the kitchen.)
