What is placement?
Placement is ensuring that people are in the right place at the right time. It has to do with helping people find a place that will contribute to their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health and well-being so that they can be happy, contributing members of society. The Guidance Program’s Placement Services considers goals, values, needs, interests and capabilities in helping clients find a niche for themselves. It provides clients with options, enables them to act on their choices, and helps them adjust to the chosen environment.
What are the types of placement?
- Personal-Social Placement
- Educational/Academic Placement
- Occupational/Career Placement
What are competencies required in Personal-Social Placement?
Personal/Social Development Placement activities can be considered highly effective if the following competencies based on the standards set by the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) (Gibson and Mitchell, 1999 p.550) are manifested by the clientele:
- attitudes, knowledge, and interpersonal skills that help them understand, appreciate and respect themselves and others
- ability to set appropriate goals, make decisions, and take necessary action to attain goals
- understanding and application of safety and survival skills
What are some Personal-Social Placement areas?
Some Personal Placement areas are:
- crisis centers/shelters/halfway homes for battered women/children
- mental hospitals
- substance-abuse centers
- homes for unwed mothers
- music schools/speech schools
- ballet or dance schools
- arts schools/drama or theater groups
- sports clubs/facilities
- cancer support groups
- Department of Social Welfare and Development/Local Government Centers
- Centers for contagious diseases like AIDS or Hepatitis C
What are competencies required in Educational/Academic Placement?
Academic Placement can aim at the following suggestions of the ASCA (Gibson and Mitchell, 1999).
- acquisition of the attitudes, knowledge, and skills that contribute to effective learning in school and across the lifespan
- completion of studies with the requisite academic preparation needed to select from post high school/college alternatives, including vocational/technical, college or university, diploma/certificate course
- comprehension of the connection between academics and the world of work and life at home in the larger community
What are the information needed for appropriate Educational/Academic Placement?
Some information needed for appropriate educational placement are:
- requirements of the institution - intellectual, academic, financial, social
- courses offered
- scholarships and financial grants
- unit requirements/years required to finish
- co-curricular/extracurricular offerings
- rules/regulations/policies
- procedure for applying and enrolling
- maintenance requirement
- religious affiliation and/or political leanings
- culture and climate
- socio-economic bracket of current population
- academic standing vis-a-vis other educational institutions
- public recognition
- location
- attire
What are the competencies required for the Occupational/Career Placement?
ASCA (Gibson and Mitchell, 1999, p. 552) lists the competencies that Guidance and Counseling programs should aim at with respect to the career development of students, which might as well be the aim of the Career development of students, which might as well be the aim of the Career Placement information and activities. Career Placement should help students
- acquire the skills needed to examine the world of work vis-a-vis knowledge of self, make informed career decisions and take appropriate steps accordingly
- use appropriate strategies to ensure career success and satisfaction in the future
- recognize the connection and interaction between personal qualities, education and training, and the world of work

4. Coordinating with reputable corporations and industries

6. Ensuring proper match between client and the requirements of and possibilities in the job, position, and work setting
7. Facilitating entry into world of work
8. Posting and disseminating job openings
9. Determining progress of graduates in the work setting as a basis for improving educational system and services or placement activities
For Currently Enrolled Students:
The counselor can also perform the aforementioned to help students find
1. part-time work - for students in financial need or wanting experience
2. Practicum settings - for those who need on-the-job training

As can be gleaned from the foregoing, Placement can be effective if counselors
- have an extensive and intensive knowledge of the different possibilities for placement
- have a thorough knowledge of the client and his/her needs for placement
- explain to the client the rationale for placement and what could be expected
- are able to liaise between the client and the institution or agency where he/she would be placed
- ensure that clients benefit from the placement
