M4.2 Prevention and Wellness Flashcards
How many levels does prevention have?
Prevention has three levels.
What do the levels of prevention depend on?
It depends upon the gravity of the disorder.
What are the levels of prevention and definition for each one?
- Primary prevention programs are for people who are not presently afflicted by the disorder.
- Secondary prevention focuses on who are experiencing the early onset of the disorder.
- Tertiary prevention deals with individuals already afflicted by the disorder and are being helped to manage it, reduce its effects, and recover from it (Gibson and Mitchell, 1999).
What should a prevention program do to be effective?
- be implemented before the onset of the indicators or symptoms of the disorder
- target populations, not individuals
- consider the uniqueness of the population and their environments, and should therefore involve the assessment of a wide range of forces influencing the lives of the target population
- consist of procedures that have been proven effective
- have strong organizational support even in the face of long-term goals
What should prevention programs start with?
As in the case of all purposeful programs, Prevention Programs must start with a systematic identificatuin of the needs and characteristics of the specifically-susceptible client population, their adaptation processes and capacities, and the elements in the environment that may hinder or facilitate growth.
What should preventive efforts appreciate?
Preventive efforts must appreciate the effects of the environment – the most important are the home, school/workplace, and community – since the environment not only influences and controls behavior but also conditions behavior in other settings (Gibson and Mitchell, 1999).
What are the content areas?
Content areas are considered essential to any Prevention Program include:
- Coping skills and strategies
