M4: Reflective practice Flashcards
what is reflective practice
Emphasizes how practitioners use reflection to learn from experience to improve their professional practice. Practitioners use reflection to make sense of uncertain, ambiguous, or conflicted situations in practice.
Often begins when a routine response produces a surprise or unexpected outcome
why is reflection important
- important for the cultivation of knowledge
- helps look at a variety of perspectives
- have a more nuanced understanding of issues
- self improvement
Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle
concrete experience –> reflective observation –> abstract conceptualization –> active experimentation … cycle repeats
anticipatory reflection
- occurs prior to actions
- allows HCPs to be deliberate about possible alternatives and prepare for a situation in advance
critical incidents
thought-provoking practice experiences that frequently arise when things go exceptionally well, or do not go as planned, or when a surprise occurs
what do critical incidents provide us (3)
1- opps to learn via reflection
2. help us discern values/beliefs, issues w ethics
3 assist in exploring assumptions
reflection in action
- takes place in the midst of professional activities
- stimulated when practitioners apply their knowledge and are met w an unexpected outcome
- results in on the spot experimentation/making adjustments to plan
reflection on action (retrospective reflection)
- occurs following an event
- evaluation of a sit; learn from it and make improvements
- deeper reflection than reflection in action
- consolidates meanings, theories, practice based knowledge
- fosters student and preceptor relationship/learning
reflective writing helps w
awareness of thoughts/feelings
explore messy sits
critical reflection
attention to a critical interrogation of the assumptions embedded in our thought processes, to social and systemic factors, and to how power circulates in practice
critically reflective practitioner = more likely to impart change at a systemic level
