M3: Rational Exponents Flashcards
What are exponents (A.K.A powers)?
They determine the number of times a base is multiplied by. Ex - (2^3 = 222)
What are radicals (A.K.A roots)?
Radicals are the opposite of powers, they turn an already large number back to its possible base. Ex - (√9 = 3^2)
What is a Rational Exponent?
A rational exponent is where the exponent of a number is a fraction. Such as 1/2 as an exponent.
What is 8^1/3 simplified.
The answer is 2.
How do you “add” exponents?
To add an exponent, just multiply them by each other.
How do you “subtract” exponents?
You subtract them when the bases are divided with each other. Ex - (4^3 / 2^1 = 2^2)
What is 2^3 * 4^-5 simplified?
64 ------------------ (2³)*(4⁻⁵) (8)*(1/4³) (8)*(1/64) 1/8
What is 10^4 / 2^6 simplified?
(10⁴/2⁶)
What is 16^1/2+27^1/3
- To get this you have to get the square root of 16 which is 4 and add it to the cubed root of 27 which is 3.;
What is 32^3/5 simplified?
8 ------------------ (⁵√32)³ (2)³ (8)
what is 8^1/3
- When you do 8 to the first power, you get 8, then you have to get the cubed root of eight since the denominator of the power is 3.
