M2: Properties of matter Flashcards
What do we mean by properties of matter
Properties of matter generally pertain to the characteristics of a certain substance that sets it
apart from other substances. It can be characterized into two groups – the physical and the chemical properties.
2 types of properties of matter
Physical and chemical property
What is physical property
The physical properties of matter are those that can be measured and observed without
changing the composition of the substance
other term for Intensive physical property
intrinsic property
What does intensive property mean
does not depend on the size or amount of the sample
What are the intensive physical properties?
color, melting point, solubility, conductivity, malleability, luster, and viscosity.
other term form extensive physical property?
extrinsic property
what does extensive physical property
depends or can be affected by
the size and number of samples.
what are the extensive properties of matter?
mass, volume, length, and shape of the substance.
What is chemical property?
The chemical property of matter is the ability of a substance to react with other substances
such as air, water, acid, and base.
examples of chemical property?
Examples are combustibility, reactivity, and ionization.
