M12: Plants Flashcards
What is the main source of chemical energy for plants?
Carbohydrates
What are the two major divisions of plants?
Vascular and Non-Vascular
What are plants?
eukaryotes that possess specialized organelles
What are the three types of plant tissue?
Vascular, dermal and ground tissues
Why do plant cells undergo mitosis?
So undifferentiated cells can become specialized
What is an example of dermal tissue?
the epidermis and periderm
Describe dermal tissue
2 tissue types. The outermost cell layers, that have thicker cell walls and is covered with a waxy cuticle.
what is the role of dermal tissue?
protection against injury, herbivores, disease and water loss
what is an example of vascular tissue?
xylem and phloem
What are the characteristics of the xylem?
thick walled cells, dead at maturity
What are the characteristics of the phloem?
thin walled cells, living at maturity
what is the role of vascular tissue?
transportation of water and nutrients, support for the plant body
describe the function of the xylem
mainly transporting water from the roots to the leaves and stem
describe the function of the phloem
mainly transports food from the leaves to the roots and stem
describe ground tissue
3 tissue types: parenchyma, collenchyma, sclerenchyma
