M1: Cell Biology Flashcards
Cell Membrane
structure that surrounds cytoplasm of the cell, and regulates the movement of materials in and out of the cell
Protoplasm
all contents of the cell
nucleus
the powerhouse of the cell; contains DNA; bound by a double membrane; contains chromosomes, genes, DNA, and RNA and directs cell division and the formation of cell structures.
cytoplasm
fluid that contains all cellular parts inside cell membrane except the nucleus
eukaryotic
cell that has a true nucleus; nuclear membrane surrounds a well-defined nucleus.
prokaryotic
cell that does not have chromosomes surrounded by nuclear membrane
chromosomes
strands of genetic material found in nucleus of eukaryotic cells
what are chromosomes composed of?
nucleic acids(DNA) and proteins
genes
short sections of a chromosome, which contain the instructions to create proteins
deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)
a molecule that carries genetic info in cells
nucleolus
a small, spherical structure located inside the nucleus
the function of the nucleolus:
to create a genetic material, called rRNa, or ribosomal ribonucleic acid.
ribonucleic acid (RNA)
single-stranded genetic messenger that carries genetic information from the nucleus to the cytoplasm
Ribosomes
structures within the cell where protein synthesis occurs
lipids
chemical goup of fats and oils
