Relevance

A

Relevance - when an idea is closely connected or related to another
As the child approaches junior high (5th-6th grade), the child starts to understand that if an adult finds a topic relevant or more pertinent, they are able to maintain the conversation longer.

narrative

A

The preschooler tells stories in heaps of unrelated statements and then adds recounts which have a beginning.
-they have no plot, no characters, no dialogue

The typical 7 year old will have a plot, a cause and effect relationship and a conclusion.

By 8 years old the TRUE narrative emerges with characters, dialogue, plot, event, consequences, problem solving, and resolution.

Shading

A

The preschool child talks about concrete things that are present.
A preschooler maintains a topic by repeating part of what their partner says.

By 10-12 years of age, a child is able to discuss abstract topics and even create a conversation on the hypothetical or imaginary.

The 6-8 year old adds new information to the conversation

A 10-12 year old, adds new information and shades the conversation by slowing moving from one topic to another.

Shading means that the speaker is understanding that the other person is also a part of a conversation and can steer the conversation to their interests as well
