M1 - Central Nervous System Flashcards
Functions of the CNS
perceive and discriminate sensory stimuli,
express emotions,
responsible for respiration and heartbeat,
organizes and regulates behavior, thinking, remembering, and understanding
meninges
a three-layer membrane that surrounds and protects the cerebral hemispheres and the spinal cord; protects the brain from external trauma and the bony protuberances of the skull
dura mater
most superior/peripheral layer of the meninges;
tough and strong (think dura-durable); adheres to the inner surface of the skull
arachnoid
middle layer of the meninges;
CSF drains and moves through this layer; thin and cobwebby (think arachnoid-spider)
subarachnoid space
inferior to the arachnoid layer of the meninges;
contains blood vessels
pia mater
inferior/central layer of the meninges; a very thin membrane that closely adheres to the brain’s surface-the gyri and sulci (pia means fragile or soft); blood vessels run from the subarachnoid space through the pia mater
ventricles
4 total;
house the ependymal that create the CSF; filled with CSF
Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF)-functions, place of production and reabsorption
regulates intracranial pressure, cleanses and nourishes CNS, absorbs shock; produced in choroid plexu, reabsorbed through venous system (arachnoid granulations)
