Lymphoma Flashcards
what is a lymphoma
malignant lymphocytes that accumulate in the lymph node
sub divisions of lymphoma
Hodgkin lymphoma
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma
what can cause a lymphadenopathy? (enlarged lymph node)
lymphoma
infection( viral/bacterial)
metastatic cancer e.g. breast
connective tissue disease e.g. sarcoidosis
what would a lymph node feel like in bacterial infection
tender, hard, smooth, inflamed skin
what would a lymph node feel like in a viral infection
tender, hard, smooth, mobile
what would a lymph node feel like in a lymphoma
non tender, rubbery/soft, smooth, mobile
what would a lymph node feel like in a metastatic carcinoma
non tender, hard, irregular, fixed
what is performed if a lymphoma or metastatic carcinoma is suspected
FNA or core needle biopsy
symptoms of a lymphoma
fever night sweats weight loss itch alcohol induced pain fatigue
after a lymphoma has been confirmed, what needs to be done to help subclassify
immunohistochemistry – looks at pattern of proteins on the surface of lymphoma cells
4 subtypes of Hodgkin disease that can be differentiated from histology
nodular sclerosis
lymphocyte rich
mixed cellularity
lymphocyte depleted
what cell type is seen in Hodgkin lymphoma
Reed Sternberg cells
which immuno markers are +ve for Reed Sternberg cells
CD30
CD15
types of non-hodgkin lymphoma
T cell
B cell
which type of non-hodgkin lymphoma is most common
B cell (90%)
immunomarker for follicular non-hodgkin lymphoma
CD20
what is B cell non-hodgkin lymphoma further divided into
Low grade B cell
High grade B cell
which is more common - Hodgkin or non-hodgkin lymphoma
non-hodgkins
mean age of non-hodgkin lymphoma presentation
50
who gets Hodgkin lymphoma
young adults 20-34
>70 year olds
what virus is associated with Hodgkin lymphoma
EBV
how is lymphoma staged
1 = one group of affected glands above the diaphragm
2= more than one group of glands either above OR below the diaphragm
3= glands both above and below the diaphragm
4= extra nodal disease
what is burkitts lymphoma
High grade B cell lymphoma
occurs in africa- associated with malaria and EBV
very sensitive to chemotherapy
