What is chylous ascites?
Accumulation of lipid rich lymph in peritoneal cavity due to lymphatic system disruption (trauma or obstruction)
Cells present in lymph nodes?
B and T cells NK cells Macrophage APC/dendrites Endothelial cells
Causes of lymphadenopathy?
Local inflammation
Systemic inflammation
Malignancy
Other eg sarcoid
Which conditions are associated with generalised lymphadenopathy
Systemic inflammatory process or widespread malignancy eg
Lymphoma/leukaemia
Wht does the red pulp of the spleen contain?
Sinusoids and cords
What are sinusoids?
Small fenestrated blood vessels lined by epithelial cells and supported by hoops of reticulin
What do cords contain?
Macrophages
Fibroblasts and cells in transit
What is the function of the spleen?
Filters the blood for unwanted or damaged material and blood borne antigens
What does the white pulp consist of
Peri arteriolar lymphoid sheath containging CD4 cells
Clinical features of splenic enlargement?
- Dragging sensation in LUQ
- Disocomfort with eating
- Pain if infarction
- Hypersplenism
Triad of hypersplenism?
Splenomegaly
Fall in one or more components of blood
Correction of cytopenias by splenectomy
Causes of splenomegaly?
Infection Congesition Haem diseases Inflammatory conditions Storage diseases
