What is lymphedema?
A
Obstruction of lymphatic drainage resulting in oedema with high protein content

What is the aetiology of lymphedema?
A
1”: Milroy’s syndrome (congenital hereditary lymphoedema)
2”:
-Infection: filariasis, post op
-Malignant infiltration: axillary, groin or intrapelvic
-Radiation/surgery: axillary/groin/lymph node removal

Clinical features of lymphedema?
A
- Classically non-pitting oedema
- Impaired limb mobility; discomfort/pain; psychological distress.

Mx lymphoedema?
A
- Avoid injury!
- Skin hygiene (moisturise, Rx infection)
- External support (compression bandages/lymphoedema sleeve)
- Exercise: gentle daily ex whilst wearing compression bandages
- Massage and manual drainage therapy

Prognosis of lymphoedema?
A
- Untreated: becomes resistant to Rx due to subcutaneous fibrosis.
- Cellulitis: rapid increase in swelling. Can lead to sepsis and death.
