  • occur as lymphocytes are stimulated when interacting with antigens in peripheral lymphoid organs
  • AKA variant, atypical, transformed, effector, plasmacytoid, Turk cells, Downey, and immunoblasts
  • Band T lymphocyte activation results in the transformation of small, resting lymphocytes into proliferating larger cells
  • often present as a heterogeneous population of various shapes and sizes
