Lymphatics I Flashcards
1
Q
What are the two vascular networks in the body?
A
- Blood vessels
- Lymphatic vessels
2
Q
What is are the function of blood vessels?
A
They deliver nutrients and immune cells to the tissues.
3
Q
What are the functions of lymphatic vessels?
A
- Collect the secreted fluid from tissues.
- Filter lymph
- Return lymph to circulation
4
Q
Where do cardiovascular and lymphatic systems arise from?
A
- The two system have the same origin but separate during embryonic development.
5
Q
What are the 2 main functions of the lymphatic system?
A
- Maintain homeostasis
- Immunologic regulation
6
Q
How does the lymphatic system help maintain homeostasis?
A
It helps maintain homeostasis in two ways:
- Fluid management
- Transportation of fats
7
Q
How does lymphatic system manage fluid?
A
It returns fluid from interstitial tissues back to vascular system (2 liters/day)
8
Q
How does lymphatic system transport fat?
A
- Fat is collected by lymphatic vessels in the intestine called Lacteals which will then transport lipid into lymph fluid (chyle)
- Lipids are then transported to the blood via thoracic duct and sent to the liver for processing.
9
Q
What is the immunologic role of the lymphatic system?
A
- It acts as a barrier and filter to reduce and eliminate foreign agents.
10
Q
What are the types of lymph organs?
A
- Primary lymph organs: \+ Red bone marrow \+ Thymus - Secondary lymph organs \+ Lymph nodes \+ Spleen
