Lymphatics Flashcards
Components of lymphatics
-lymphatic capillaries
-collecting lymphatic vessels
-lymph nodes
-thoracic duct & right lymphatic trunk
Lymphatic capillaries function
-absorb interstitial solutes, macromolecules, and immune cells that extravasate from the blood vascular system
Collecting lymphatic vessels function
-contain zipper-like junctions, lymphatic valves, and contractile smooth muscle cells that enable unidirectional propulsion of lymph
Forces affecting arterial side
Moving outward
- Capillary pressure
- Negative interstitial free fluid pressure
- Interstitial fluid colloid osmotic pressure
Moving inward
- Plasma colloid osmotic pressure
Arterial flow into the lymphatic system
- Net outward force
- Lymphatic system is highly permeable and takes in everything pushed out of blood
Forces affecting venous side
Moving inward
- Plasma colloid osmotic pressure
Moving outward
- Capillary pressure
- Negative interstitial free fluid pressure
- Interstitial fluid colloid osmotic pressure
Venous flow and lymphatic system
-net inward force
-whatever is not picked up by tissues or moved into the lymphatics will be pulled into the veinous system
