Lymphatic System - Exam 2 Flashcards
How is the lymphatic system unique to the cardiovascular system?
has no pump (heart)
How is the lymphatic system similar to the venous system?
its a low pressure system
What are the functions of the lymphatic system?
transports... excess fluid excess proteins (solutes) digested lipids ...into the bloodstream
What does the subclavian vein do for the lymphatic system?
dumps materials from the lymphatic system into the heart
heart circulates the materials back into the bloodstream
How does the lymphatic system assist in inflammatory response?
inflammation causes albumin to move in, which decreases permeability
albumin can’t come out if permeability increases again
lymphatic system flushes albumin out
What are the lymphoid tissues?
tonsils
spleen
Preyer’s patches
appendix
How does lymph flow into the bloodstream?
via semilunar valves and muscular pump
Where is the lymphatic system not located?
the brain
What is the significance of the absence of the lymphatic system in the brain?
swelling can’t happen
What part of the brain acts as the lymphatic system?
cerebrospinal fluid
When does CSF act as the lymphatic system?
during sleep
How does CSF act as the brain’s lymphatic system?
- fluid fills space around the brain and allows for waste to come into CSF to be dumped into blood
- CSF is then pumped back into the brain from outside of blood vessels
How do the cells of the brain change during CSF transport?
cells shrink to allow for better CSF transport
