Lymphatic System Flashcards
How does fluid flow through lymphatic system
Reliant on muscle contraction, pressure changes and gravity - unidirectional due to valves
Describe organisation of system
Blind-end sacs in tissue which are highly permeable, to lymph capillaries which merge to form lymphatic vessels which then join to form lymphatic trunks
Role of afferent lymph vessel
Lymph taken from ISF in tissue to lymph node
Role of efferent lymph vessel
Lymph node filtration and B cells form antibodies which join lymph fluid
Location of lymph node
Cervical Axillary Tracheobronchial - bifurcation of trachea Inguinal Abdominal
Role of germinal centres (in follicles) during infection?
Rapid B cell formation
What does the inner cortex contain?
T cells and dendritic cells that bring information about infection
Function of lymph node
Filter lymph and produce an immune response
What is the sentinel lymph node?
The FIRST lymph node that tumour spreads to as it drains a cancer
Where the the thoracic duct located?
L1 as the cisterns chyli - between the azygous vein and the descending aorta
Drains into the junction of the upper left jugular and left subclavian vein
