What is the largest lymphatic vessel in the body?
Thoracic duct. (But also remember the right lymphatic vessel).
What is the cisterna chyli?
Dilated portion of the thoracic duct just below the diaphragm.
What are the 2 main groups of lymphatics?
Deep - associaetd with deep vessel in neck, limbs, trunk and walls of viscera.
Superficial - located in subcutaneous tissue.
What are lacteals, and what do they do?
special lymphatic capillaries that receive fat which has been absorbed from the small intestine.
What happens to the lymph in lymph nodes?
Screened by the bodys immune system for potentially harmful cells and organisms.
What is the major cell type present in lymph nodes?
Lymphocytes
How does lymph compare to plasma?
The same, but with less suspended protein.
Which directly does lymph only EVER move?
Towards the heart
What is the venous angle formed by?
where the subclavian vein meets the internal jugular vein.
Where do the 2 main lymphatic vessels join the venous system?
Thoracic duct - left venous angle.
Right lymphatic duct - right venous angle.
Where does the thoracic duct collect lymph from?
Left side of body, and the right side below the thorax.
What does the right lymphatic duct collect lymph from?
Right side of thorax, right upper limb and right side of head and neck.
