Haemodynamics Flashcards
What are the 5 major components of a typical reflex?
1 - Receptor. 2- ascending pathway. 3- CNS. 4- efferent pathway. 5-effector.
What do baroreceptors measure?
Degree of stretch within arterial walls.
What do chemoreceptors measure?
predominantly co2, but also oxygen and pH.
Where can BOTH chemoreceptors and baroreceptors be found?
Aortic arch and carotid sinuses.
Which nerve garries the afferent impulse from the carotid sinus?
Glossopharyngeal nerve. The vagus nerve carries the afferents from the aortic arch.
Which nerves are the effectors?
Vagus and splanchnic nerves to control HR etc.
What are vasomotor nerves?
Sympathetic nerves that innervate blood vessels.
Where may sympathetic vasomotor nerves produce vasodilation?
Brain.
Which features facilitate venous return?
Valves, muscle compression, close arteries, thoracoabdominal pump.
