Lymphatic System Flashcards
Function of lymphatic system (4)
Remove excess fluids from body tissues
Absorbs fatty acids from intestines
Transports chyle and fat soluble vitamins via the lacteala in the intessinal villi to the bloodstream
Production of immune cells (lymphocytes) which aid in immune response and removal of pathogens.
Components of lymphatic system (5)
Lymphatic capillaries
Lymphatic vessels
Lymphatic ducts
Lymphatic nodes
Lymphatic tissues
Function of lymphatic capillaries (2)
They form networks within tissues gathering fluid by osmosis. In the intestinal villi.
The capillaries are known as lacteals and gather up digested fats and attached products
How do substances move through lymphatic vessels
Passive movement from the surrounding muscles moves substances through vessels, backflow is prevented with the presence of valves.
Thoracic duct Transports substances (2)
Substances are collects in this duct from almost all of the body.
Drained until the jugular vein or cranial vena cava (near heart)
The right lymphatic duct
Drains fluid from head, neck, thorax and right forelimb
Drains into right jugular vein or cranial vena cava
Tracheal ducts
Drains from the head and neck into the thoracic ducts or one of the main vessels near the heart.
Vessels which deliver to lymph nodes are known as afferent vessels
Vessels which leave lymph nodes are known as efferent vessels
Lymph node function (2)
Remove particles/pathogens
Produces lymphocytes
Describe location of submandibular node
Below the mandibles
Describe location of the parotid node
Below the ears, behind temporomandibular joint
Prescapular node
In front of scapulae (shoulders)
Axillary node
In the axillae (armpits)
Popliteal node
Just behind stifle joint (knee)
Superficial inguinal node
In the groin
Lymphatic organs / tissues
Spleen,
Thymus,
Tonsils
Peyers Patch
Describe location (1) and function (3) of spleen
Spleen is closely attached to the greater curvature of the stomach and lies within the omentum.
Functions:
Reservoir for red blood cells and platelets
Removes worn out cells and recovers leftover iron from destroyed blood cells.
Filter out foreign particles and bacteria from circulation
Produce lympocytes
Location and function of tonsils
L - TONSILS FORMA RING AT THE JUNCTION OF THE PHARYNX AND ORAL CAVITY
F - THE TONSILS ACT AS A FIRST LINE OF DEFENCE AGAINST MICRO-ORGANISMS WHICH ENTER THE ORAL CAVITY.
Location and function of thymus
L- thymus is found in thoracic inlet until adulthood where it most often disappears.
F - the thymus us responsible for producing T-lympocytes
