Lymphatic System Flashcards
Purpose of Lymphatic System
returns fluid leaked from blood vessels back to the blood vessels
3 Parts of the Lymphatic System
Lymphatic vessel, lymph fluid, lymph node
Lymphoid organs
spleen, thymus, tonsils, MALT, peyers patches, appendix, red bone marrow
Lymphatic vessels
inersitial fluid enters where it changes to lymph fluid, unidirectional flow
intersitial fluid
when fluid exits blood vessels and washes around the tissues
Flow of lymph fluid
lymphatic capillary to lymphatic collectiong vessels to node to trunk to duct and back to blood vessels
Lymphatic Capillaries
very permeable due to overlapping endothelial cells that form valve flaps in the walls of vessels
Function of Lymphatic Capillaries
drain fluid, proteins, pathogens, debris, and cancer cells
Lacteals
set of specialized capillaries
Lacteal Function
absorb digested fats from intestine, turning the clear lymph fluid into milky fluid called Chyle
Location of Lacteals
villi of intestinal mucosa
Where are not capillaries not found?
bones, teeth, bone marrow, CNS
Collecting vessels
have 3 tunics, thinner walls, more valves, anastomose
Superficial Vessels
in skin, travel with veins
deep vessels
of the trunk, travels with arteries
Lymphatic Trunks
collecting vessels fuse to form trunks
5 lymphatic trunks
lumbar, subclavian, jugular, intestinal
Lymphatic duct
2 large ducts in thoracic region
right lymphatic duc
drains lymph from right side of head and throrax + arm
thoracic duct
much larger and drains lymph from rest of the body. often formed from an enlarged sac, the cistera chyli
Lymph Clusters
neck, shoulder, groin
Transport of lymph
no pump + low pressure=sporadic flow
