Lymphatic organ Flashcards
What are all the lymphatic organs
Adenoids and tonsils, thymus gland, spleen, payers patches, appendix, red bone marrow
Describe the adenoids and tonsils
They are similar to lymph nodes
Trap germs that come through the mouth and nose
Contain immune cells to produce antibodies
Adenoids is covered in mucus and cilia (hair-like structures)
Describe the thymus gland
Part of the endocrine system
Produces progenitor cells which mature into T cells
These T cells also help other lymphatic organs grow
It gradually shrinks as we age and it’s almost gone by age 65
Describe the spleen
A giant lymph node
Filters blood removing old damaged and malformed cells
Stores platelets and white blood cells
Helpful against pneumonia and meningitis
Describe payers patches
Pockets in the lining of the intestine containing lymphocytes
Most common in the alien
Monitor and manage bacteria growth within the bowel
Able to call in reinforcements from mesenteric lymph nodes
Describe the appendix
contains lymphoid tissue that helps manage bacteria within the intestine
stores good bacteria to help reset the bowel post-infection
Describe red bone marrow
produces juvenile lymphocytes which mature in other lymphatic organs/lymph nodes
Produces red blood cell that also helps fight against infection
Where is the thymus located
And in the middle of the upper chest between the right and left lung
Where is the spleen located
Just above the stomach
Where are payers patches located
In the lining of the intestine
Where is the appendix
It is attached to the large intestine, it is located between the small intestine and the large intestine
