Lymph System Flashcards
How do you tell the difference between masses, cysts, and lymph tissue
What assessment technique
?
Know where all the lymph nodes are and where they drain
Moves from bloodstream to interstitial spaces No built-in pumping mechanism Collected by tubules/ducts Carried to lymph nodes Moved to venous system Subclavian veins Closed but porous circulation
Deeper nodes cannot be palpated such as:
bronchial and mediastinal lymph nodes
Lymphatic drainage can be seen on page 186. Please note the lymphatic drainage pathway of the breast

When you find a lymph node enlargement, and characterize it, explore adjacent areas and regions drained by those nodes for signs of possible malignancy or infection. Examine other areas for enlargement.
The sentinel lymph node is the first lymph node into which a tumor drains. It is the first place a cancer is likely to spread, In breast cancer the sentinel node is usually located in the axillary nodes
