Lymph node pathology Flashcards
What characterizes non-specific benign follicular hyperplasia?
(1) Preservation of lymph node architecture
(2) Marked variation of follicles
(3) Presence of frequent mitosis and phagocytic macrophages
What patterns are seen in HIV lymphadenopathy?
(1) Follicular hyperplasia
(2) Follicular involution
(3) Lymphocyte depletion
How is infectious mononucleosis diagnosed?
EBV titer IgM and IgG
May resemble lymphoma, some cells look like Reed-Sternberg cells (owl eye cells) found in Hodgkin Lymphoma
What is lymphoma?
Neoplastic proliferation of lymphoid tissue
What three viruses can cause lymphoma?
(1) EBV
(2) HTLV-1
(3) HHV-8 (Kaposi sarcoma herpes virus)
What are three differences between small and large cell lymphoma?
(1) SCL - indolent, LCL - aggressive
(2) SCL - disseminated, LCL - localized
(3) SCL - incurable, LCL - curable
What chromosomal translocation causes follicular lymphoma?
t(14;18) - BCL2 and IgH genes translocated
What are the histogical characteristics of follicular lymphoma?
(1) Disruption of normal lymph node architecture by neoplastic follicles
(2) Lack of tingible body macrophages due to absence of apoptosis
What translocation causes mantle cell lymphoma?
t(11;14) - cyclin D1 and IgH genes translocated, leading to constitutive transition from G1 to S phase of cell cycle
