LW - The immune system Flashcards
What is the definition of immunopathology?
Tissue damage caused by an excessive immune response.
What is the definition of autoimmunity?
The inability to distinguish self from non-self.
What is the definition of an allergy?
The inappropriate response to an environmental agent.
What is the definition of immunotherapy?
Describes the treatment where the immune response is being stimulated.
What is the main functions of a macrophage?
Kill intracellular pathogens.
What is the main functions of a neutrophil?
Kills rapidly dividing bacteria.
What is the main functions of an eosinophil?
Kills parasites.
What is the main functions of a NK cell?
Kills virus-infected cells.
What is the main functions of a mast cell?
Triggers an inflammatory response.
What is the main functions of a dendritic cell?
Activates the adaptive immune response.
What are the cellular components of the innate immune response?
Phagocytes. Macrophages. Neutrophils. Eosinophils. Basophils. Mast cells. NK cells
What are the soluble factors of the innate immune response? What is the function of each of them?
Complement - coats pathogens with cells that the innate immune system can attack.
Acute phase - similar to complement proteins.
Interferons - activates cells to produce anti-viral proteins.
What are the components of the adaptive immune response?
T-cells
B-cells
Immunoglobulins
Dendritic cells
How do dendritic cells link the innate immune response and the adaptive immune response?
- Take up microbial agents at the site of infection.
- Become activates and travel to lymph nodes.
- Activates naive T-cells in the lymph nodes.
