What were Luthers parents like and what were their backgrounds? When was he born?
Claimed to come from poor background and that his parents beat him. In reality fathers family were successful and mother was highly educated. They did treat him violently and his mother was very religious. Thought the devil came out when thunder happened.

What were Luther’s first two Schools what were the schools like? What years did he attend?
First went to Magdeburg grammar school then changed and learnt latin for 4 years. The schools were strict and he claimed he was beaten quite often.

What was the first university he attended and what did he study? Why did he quit early?
Joined Uni of Einfurt, one of the best in Germany and studied liberal arts. Completed Bachelor of Arts in 1 year and moved onto law but after 2 months became a monk. Claimed he chose out of fear and had depression prior.
What order did he join and how long was he in this order for?
Augustinian Order (local helpers teachers etc) in 1505 - 1511
What was his experience as a Monk like? When did he become a priest?
After 2 years became an ordained priest. Was scared and subjected himself to suffering.
Who was his mentor as a monk, what position was he and what piece of advise did he suggest?
John Von Staupitz, head of Augustinian Order told him suffering wouldn’t affect it. He suggested Luther should return to university and do a degree in theology. At the time he learnt views of a humanist bible.
What happened in his trip to Rome?
1510-11 went to rome for pilgrimage but the insincerity of Rome disappointed him and he left.
What university did Luther join after his trip to Rome and what his role and opinion in/of the place/university?
He joined Wittenburg university 3 months after leaving Rome. Wittenburg was a small dirty town.
What was his role In Wittenburg uni and when did he receive this job? What problem did he face when teaching?
In 1512, he became professor of Biblical studies. He faced issue when deciding whether to teach humanist or traditional views.
How did Erasmus influence him and how did his views on Christianity change?
Luther read Erasmus’s translation of bible and led topic in his belief in sola scriputra (Life according to bible)
How did his study of the Bible affect him?
Believed in sola scriptura and sola fide(Faith alone) believed we should repent and believe in Gods mercy.

Erfurt university.
