When and where did Charles V agree to see Luther in 1521?
He agreed to see Luther in Worms (town) (DIET OF WORMS). He was given safe conduct to travel

He called for his first Diet to meet in Worms in January. Highest in the land came including Dr John Eck and Cardinal Aleander
What was Leo’s aims for the Diet?
To condemn Luther immediately; however the threat of the Ottomans and funding wars was first priority for Charles.

The 102 Gravamina (Grievances) aimed at the Church in Germany - issues that they wanted to be fixed by a general council

They asked Luther if he upheld the content of the books he had written. He asked for time and Charles agreed.

He agreed he’d written them and said they were harmless and based on the scriptures. He was then asked if he revoked his views he said no.
What happened at the end of the diet of Worms?
Luther was declared an outlaw and sent home by the edict of worms which also forced all books by him to be burnt.
Why did the edict of worms fail?
- Structure of empire meant Charles had to rely on princes and city authorities to enforce it. - Princes said they’d only enforce it if Charles put pressure on the Pope to call general council and address 102 gravamina - Charles could not force princes due to capitulation - Luther had vanished

On his way home he was kidnapped by Frederick the Wise and taken to Wartburg castle where he stayed for a while

He began to use Erasmus’ greek testament to begin making German Bible
When did he leave Wartburg castle and why?
He heard reports of extremism in March 1522 in Wittenburg and chose to leave.
