Lustman (2000) measures of non adherence Flashcards
Aim
To see if there was a link between depression and non adherence in diabetic patients medication
Method
Randomised double blind study
Participants
60 with type 1/2 diabetes and diagnosed with depression
volunteer sample
Procedure
Patients randomly assigned to either one group given fluoxetine (used to treat depression) or the other group given a placebo
Patients and doctors did not know who had been assigned to which group
Depression assigned by psychometric tests
Adherence to diabetic medical regime assessed by measuring blood glucose levels
8 weeks
Results
After the 8 weeks the fluoxetine group had far healthier blood glucose levels. Patients who reported less depressive symptoms also more regularly monitored their blood glucose levels
Patients given fluoxetine reported lower levels of depression
Fluoxetine pp’s had lower GHb levels which indicated improved adherence
If their depression is being medicated they were more likely to adhere to their diabetic regime
Conclusion
Measuring blood sugar levels in patients with diabetes indicates their level of adherence to prescribed medical regimes
greater adherence shown by patients who were less depressed
not being anxious or depressed improves compliance with medical requests
