Lupus Flashcards
Lupus broad definition
Hyperactive T and B cells caused by humoral and CMI responses
- caused by inability to remove apoptotic bodies allowing B-cells to generate antibodies to react to the apoptotic bodies. Specifically the nuclear remnants of the apoptotic bodies
include type 2-4 hypersensitivity
- primarily type 3 hypersensitivity though
ANA
Antinuclear antibodies, always present in patients with lupus, however ANA alone does not induce lupus
- most common ANAs found in lupus is anti-DsDNA and anti- Sm
ANA complexes
Form with antigens and self nuclear antigens
- deposit in random areas triggering compliment and a self fulfilling cycle where antibodies keep being created and not being removed
Where do the immune ANA complexes precipitate
Vascular basement membranes and activate compliment
- can lead to vascular, kidney and arthritis
Malar/ butterfly rush
Most common sign with lupus
- runs along the cheeks, bridge of nose and eyelids
- more prevalent in the sun
most frequently in women in child bearing years
- doesn’t usually occur in babies, however babies that have a mother with lupus can develop heart blocks
Other clinical signs of lupus
Predominant signs in only one system, however the system affected various form patient to patient
- potential systems
- lungs
