The body mistakes part of the cell’s nucleus as a foreign antigen and begins to develop antibodies —> Antibodies destroy cells –> Antigen-antibody complexes get trapped and build up in capillaries and damage organs
What does lupus most commonly affect?-7
skin, mucous membranes, musculoskeletal, renal, nervous, CV, and respiratory systems

- Fever, weight loss, malaise
- Rash, skin lesions, pigment changes
- Oral ulcers
- Joint swelling / pain
- Pericarditis, dysrhythmias, chest pain
- Nephritis
- Psychosis, cognitive impairment, neuropathy
lab tests lupus-5
- antinuclear antibody (ANA) +
- anti-DNA (+)
- anti-ds DNA (+)
- anti-Sm (+)
- CBC (RBC, WBC, PLT) (low RBC, low plt, Elevated WBC in acute exacerbation, but generally they will be low) -Pt experience thrombocytopenia
Patient is diagnosed with Lupus when 4 or more criteria are present: -11
- Malar rash
- Discoid rash
- Oral ulcers
- Nonerosive arthritis
- Pleuritis or pericarditis
- Photosensitivity
- Kidney disease
- Neurologic disease
- Hematologic disorder
- Immunologic disorder
- Positive ANA test

control symptoms of acute exacerbations and prevention of progressive loss of organ function
Nursing management-6
Assess for signs of infection
Educate patients on importance of adhering to medication therapy
Instruct patient to avoid sun exposure
Dietary consult (Promote healthy, balanced diet)
Smoking cessation (Lupus patients are at greater risk for lung cancer and hypertension)
Educate patient on importance of regular health screenings
