Lungs Flashcards
Where are the lungs located
Either side of the mediastinum within the thoracic cavity, surrounded by the pleural cavity
What are the lung roots
Collection of structures entering and leaving the lungs
They suspend each lung from the mediastinum
What are the parts of the lungs
Apex
Base
Lobes
3 surfaces - costal, mediastinal and diaphragmatic
3 borders - anterior, inferior and posterior
What is the lung apex
Superior end of the lung which extends above the level of the 1st rib
What is the lung base
Concave inferior surface of the lung that rests on the diaphragm
How many lobes does each lung have
Left - 2 (superior and inferior)
Right - 3 (superior, middle and inferior)
How are the lung surfaces named
They correspond to the area of the thorax that they face
What divides the lungs into lobes
Fissures
What fissures divide the left lung
Left oblique fissure
What fissures divide the right lung
Right oblique fissure
Horizontal fissure
Where does the oblique fissure run from and to
From the inferior border to the posterior border in a superoposterior direction
Where does the horizontal fissure run from and to
From the sternum at the level of rib 4 to the oblique fissure in a horizontal direction
What surface is the hilum on
Mediastinal
Where is the mediastinal surface
Faces the lateral aspect of the middle mediastinum
Where is the diaphragmatic surface
Base of the lungs facing the diaphragm
Where is the costal surface
Faces the internal surface of the chest wall
What forms the anterior border
Anterior convergence of the mediastinal and costal surfaces
What difference is there between the anterior borders on the left and right lung
Anterior border of the left lung is marked by the cardiac notch
What does the inferior border separate
Base of the lung from the mediastinal and costal surfaces
What forms the posterior border
Posterior convergence of the costal and mediastinal surfaces
Which borders are smooth/sharp
Anterior and inferior borders are sharp
Posterior border is smooth
What’s contained in the lung root
Bronchus Pulmonary artery 2 pulmonary veins Bronchial vessels Pulmonary plexus of nerves Lymphatic vessels
What is the hilum
Wedge shaped area on the mediastinal surface of each lung where structures enter and leave the lung
Course of the trachea
Begins at the lower border of the cricoid cartilage in the neck
Terminates at the level of the sternal angle by dividing into the right and left bronchi
