Lung Volumes & Capacity Flashcards
What is minute respiratory volume?
The amount of new air moved into the respiratory passages each minute.
MRV= Tidal Volume x Respiratory rate
=. 500ml x 12
=6 L/min
What’s the difference between lung volumes & lung capacities?
Volumes- don’t overlap, add up to the Total Lung Capacity
Capacity- overlap,sum of 2 or more volumes
Definitions of all the 4 types of lung volumes;
Tidal volume-the volume inhaled/exhald during breathing;500ml at rest
Residual volume-the volume left after Maximal exhalation(protests from collapsing)
Expiratory reserve volume-The additional volume that can be exhaled after normal expiration
Inspiratory reserve volume- The additional volume that can be inhaled after normal inspiration.
Definitions or calculations of the 4 types of lung capacities;
1.Total Lung Capacity-VT+ERV+IRV+RV
2.Vital lung capacity-IRV+ERV+VT
3.Functional Residual Capacity- RV+ERV
4.Inspiratory Capacity- IRV+VT
What is total lung capacity
Maximum volume of air that the lungs can hold
Volume of air in the lungs after maximum inhalation
What is functional residual capacity?
The volume of air in the lungs after NORMAL expiration
