Lung Volume terminology Flashcards
Tidal Volume
Amount of air moving in and out of lungs in one breath cycle
Inspiratory Reserve Volume
The extra volume of air which could be inhaled with maximum effort after reaching the end of a normal inspiration.
Expiratory reserve Volume
The excess volume of air which could be exhaled with maximum effort after normal exhalation
Residual volume
The left over air which is left in the lungs after maximum expiration (volume of air which cannot be expelled from the lungs)
Total Lung Capacity
The amount of air you lungs can hold
Vital Capacity
the amount of air exhaled after maximal inhalation. VC = (TV + IRV +ERV)
Functional residual capacity
The amount of volume remaining n the lungs after passive exhalation
Collateral Ventilation
The ventilation of alveoli which bypass the normal airways: -the interalveolar, the bronchioloalveolar and the interbronchiolar communications.
(The movement of air between the alveoli and bronchioles when airways are obstructed)
= The hold in thoracic expansion aids collateral ventilation
