Lung Topography Flashcards
Where is the Suprasternal Notch located?
On the anterior chest.
Located at the top of the manubrium.
Where is the Sternal Angle located?
(angle of louise)
Located below the suprasternal notch.
It articulates with the second rib.
Can be felt between the gladiolus and the manubrium.
Where is the carina located?
The Carina is located directly underneath the sternal angle.
(it is the point where the bronchi split)
Where is the manubrium located?
The superior section of the sternum. Located between the sternal notch and
sternal angle
It is located around ribs 1 (kinda) and ends around 2.
Where is the gladiolus located?
Between ribs 2 and 6.
It is the main body of the sternum
It lays between the Manubrium and Xiphoid.
Where do lungs lay?
Lungs lay between the top of the clavicle down to T7
Where is the Xiphoid located?
Under the Gladiolus.
located around T6
Where is C7 located?
When the patient extends the head and neck forward, chin slightly down,
C7 is the most prominent spinous process and can be easily palpated at
the base of the posterior neck.
T1 - T12
T1 is located directly inferior to C7. The remainder of the
thoracic vertebrae can be counted by palpating the spinous
process of each vertebrae
Where is the scapulae located?
(tentative answer)
Between T2 and T8
Where is the inferior scapulae located?
located at T6 - T7
With patient arms raised above head, this.
Inferior border is almost directly over the oblique fissure.
Oblique Fissures (separate upper lobes from lower lobes,)
Anteriorly:
6th rib midclavicular line, rises as you move laterally until it is at the 5th rib midaxillary and then ~T3 posteriorly for the left ~T4 or T5 for the right
Posteriorly:
When arms raised above the head, the inferior or bottom edge of the
scapular borders approximately mark the oblique fissures
Diaphragm position
hint left and right side are different.
Right side: relaxed (end expiration) 5th rib anteriorly & ~T9 posteriorly
Left side: relaxed (end expiration) 6th rib anteriorly & ~T10 posteriorly
Lung borders.
Anteriorly, the lungs project ~ 2 to 4 cm above the medial third of the
clavicles
o Anteriorly the inferior borders are ~ at the sixth rib midclavicularly while laterally the border drops to ~ 8th rib
o Posteriorly the top of the lung rises to ~T1 while the inferior border move with
respiration between T9 and T12
