Rescue treatment of infants who have developed RDS (missing surfactant)

Begin to act immediately on instillation into the trachea

Emergency drug; no contraindication

Patent ductus arteriosus Hypotension Intraventricular hemorrhage Pneumothorax Pulmonary air leak Hyperbilirubinemia Sepsis
Assessment
History Emergency drug: no contraindications Time of birth and exact weight for dosage
Physical exam for effectiveness of drug:
Temperature, respirations, lung sounds, endotracheal tube placement and patency, and chest movements
Blood pressure, pulse, and arterial pressure
Blood gases and oxygen saturation
Diagnosis
Decreased cardiac output
Risk for injury
Ineffective airway clearance
Deficient knowledge
Implementation
Monitor continuously
Suction before administration, but wait two hours after administration
Support for parents
Other supportive measures for premature infants
