Selectively and competitively block or antagonize receptors for the production of leukotrienes
They do not have an immediate effect
Indications
Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of bronchial asthma

Contraindication
Acute asthma attack
Caution
Hepatic or renal impairment
Pregnancy and lactation
Adverse effects
URI, pharyngitis, cough
CNS: Headache, dizziness
GI: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, elevated liver enzymes
generalized pain, fever, myalgia
Mood changes
Drug-Drug Interactions
Propranolol, theophylline, terfenadine, warfarin, calcium channel blockers, cyclosporine, or aspirin
Assessment
History Contraindications: Allergy, acute bronchospasm or asthmatic attack Caution: Impaired renal or hepatic function, pregnancy and lactation
Physical Temperature, respirations, and lung sounds CNS: Orientation and affect Abdominal evaluation
Labs: liver and renal function tests
