What is the difference between the pulmonary lobule and pulmonary acinus?
The lobule includes the Terminal Bronchioles in it.
What is the cause of Emphysema (COPD)
A loss of elasticity and breakdown of elastic fibers.
What disease mainly causes Emphysema?
Alpha 1 Antitrypsin
What type of epithelium makes up the respiratory bronchioles?
Ciliated cuboidal cells with no goblet cells present and some Clara Cells
Where is the functional unit of the pulmonary acinus found?
Alveolus
What tissue is found in the alveolus?
Simple squamous
What is the role of type one alveolar cells?
Gas Exchange
What is the role of type 2 alveolar cells?
Produce surfactant
What enzyme can be found in alveolar endothelial cells?
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)
What is the cause of Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome?
When a Baby is born before 35 weeks they have insufficient levels of surfactant in their lungs. This can also occur with babies of diabetic mothers.
What makes up the blood air barrier?

A tumor that originates in the mesothelial cell lining of the pleura
